The Night Before Diggmas
THE NIGHT BEFORE DIGGMAS
by Anonymous
'Twas the night before Diggmas, when all through the site,
Not a Digger was stirring, not even MediaSight.
The submittals were posted on Digg with great care,
In hopes that Kevin Rose soon would be there;
The newbies were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of front page danced in their heads;
As I logged onto Digg, before going to bed,
In hopes of relaxing, to help ease my head.
From out of my speakers arose such a loud din,
I jumped so hard, nearly out of my skin.
On the screen I looked to see what varied,
Madly I searched to see who was buried,
The site was lit as moon on new fallen snow,
Bright as mid-day on the page it did show,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature beer wagon, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, half drunk and so spry,
Holding up a beer, who was this guy?
Swifter than eagles his coursers they came,
He whistled, then shouted and called them by name;
"Now, Aaron! now, Anton! now, Beth and Jen!
On, Eric! on Erica! on, Jay and `Gren!
To the top of the page, take care not to fall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the top, the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Diggs, and Kevin Rose too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard in my ears,
A sound of a few people opening some beers,
As I drew back my hand from the keyboard so fast,
Down the page went Mr. Rose with toot and a blast.
He was dressed as a beach bum, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
But a bundle of diggs he had flung on his back,
As a peddler he appeared, with a huge sack.
His eyes -- how they glowed! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were all rosey, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was too scarce to show;
The logo for Digg was seen clearly on his chest,
And the smell of beer came from his breath;
He had a broad face and filled with great cheer,
When he bent over, an ad for Budweiser was there.
He was chubby and quick, like a jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his works,
Giving Diggs to all, while burying the jerks,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up page he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like a shot from a pistol.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he went from the site,
"Happy Diggmas to all, have a hell of a night."
